for individualized attention. Some classes may be offered each semester and may
be repeated to further develop skills. We do try to include a variety of media and
themes, therefore, classes will vary from semester to semester. The instructors
are trained, creative educators who enjoy sharing their expertise and nurturing

Lecture Series
Origins Of Wisconsin Art: The Munich Academy
Saturday, January 26
4:00 p.m.
Wisconsin’s early art history is inextricably connected to Germany. Due to the early
ethnic settlement of Wisconsin, our state’s rich visual art history is intertwined
with the major 19th century German art academies, most specifically the Munich Academy,
which was a leading international art school.
Leon Krempel, Curator of Munich’s Haus der Kunst, a major German art exhibition
venue, will be at the Museum of Wisconsin Art to speak about the history of the
Munich Academy and his forthcoming exhibition on the same subject. Krempel is giving
his lecture in conjunction with his research trips to select 100 paintings from
around the world that best exemplify the history of this iconic art school that
was attended by dozens of late 19th and early 20th century Wisconsin artists. Krempel
is in Wisconsin to arrange a loan from the Museum of Wisconsin Art for this exhibition.
The Path of Discovery:
The Christine LaJoice Collection of Bernhard Schneider Photographs
Sunday, February 17
2:30 p.m.
(Snow date - Sunday February 24)
It all began in a dark basement in Cedarburg. It will end with 100-year-old images
of that town and Milwaukee being shown in public for the first time ever. When Christine
LaJoice found some old glass negative photographic plates, she had no idea what
they were or who took them. With uncommon dedication and dogged research, Christine
determined that they were by well-known painter (but unknown photographer) Bernhard
Schneider who came to America to be one of the Panorama Painters in Milwaukee in
the 1880s. A quiet, reserved man who rarely sought to promote his work, Schneider
died in Cedarburg in 1907, leaving a little-known aspect of his life hidden from
view. The snapshot-like images he took are charmingly frank, ranging from early
views of the downtown Milwaukee shoreline, picnics, views of his adopted hometown,
potential studies for paintings and portraits of friends.
On Sunday, February 17th at 2:30 p.m., Christine LaJoice will give a presentation
on how she found the negatives and found out their history and identity. Don't miss
this opportunity to glimpse the past for the first time through the viewfinder of
an artist and the curiosity of a genuine history detective!

Lectures
JOSEPH FRIEBERT
Sunday, May 18 2:00 p.m.
The son of a tailor and union activist, Joseph Friebert’s prints and paintings are deeply attuned to social conditions and concerns. Initially, his art career was rather unconventional. After high school, he became a registered pharmacist working at the Oriental Pharmacy in Milwaukee, rendering him unable to participate in Depression-era WPA programs. Consequently, Friebert joined the Businessman’s Art Club and began his career as an artist in 1932. He painted humanity in many different environments, but always with a great sensitivity and sympathy towards the common man and his everyday existence. This exhibition will contain many family-owned works that showcase the essence of Friebert’s somber style and subject matter.
Rachel May will graduate from Friebert’s alma mater, UW-Milwaukee, in May 2008 with a degree in Art History. She has interned with the MWA since 2007. As co-curator of this exhibition, her gallery talk will discuss Friebert’s background and how it impacted his artistic output.
CHARLES WINSTANLEY THWAITES: HIS LIFE AND WORK
Sunday, July 20th, 2008 at 2:00 p.m.
A painter and printmaker, Charles Thwaites was active in Wisconsin with Federal Art Projects during the 1930s and his work from this period is unmistakably regionalist, possessing a narrative realist style and subject matter. As art styles evolved in the late 1940s and early 1950s he responded appropriately. He moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, becoming one of the “Taos Moderns” and adopted abstract and non-representative styles. This MWA-curated show is the first retrospective of Thwaites’ work and will reveal him to be a significant artist whose career can be divided into two significant eras and locations.
Susan Hallsten McGarry is an independent curator and writer living in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She served as editor-in-chief of Southwest Art magazine from 1979 to 1997 and has authored more than fifteen books and catalogs on American artists including the newly published The Art of Charles W. Thwaites: Freedom of Expression.
EMILY GROOM
Sunday, August 17 2:00 p.m.
Although trained in Chicago, New York and London, Emily Groom was an influence on several generations of Wisconsin artists. She maintained a 55-year connection with the Milwaukee-Downer College where she organized the art department and taught undergraduate and extension classes. Working at her Cambridge Avenue home in Milwaukee or at her summer studio in Genesee Depot, she created numerous “en plein air” floral and landscape paintings in an impressionistic style. This small exhibition will draw on museum and family-owned collections, and focus on her response to her Wisconsin surroundings.
Rachel May will graduate from UW-Milwaukee, in May 2008 with a degree in Art History and has interned with MWA since 2007. A co-curator of this exhibition, her gallery talk will discuss Groom’s background and her Wisconsin-specific work.
Sneak Peek Fridays

FRIPPERY: PECULIAR BIJOUTERY OR CURIOUSLY ADORNED?
Friday, June 6 10:30 a.m.
Some synonyms for the word “Frippery” are gewgaw, knick-knack, tinsel, gaudy, frivolous, ostentatious, trivial and unnecessary. This exhibition features the work of Julia Barello, Marna Brauner, Carolynn Desch, Hai-Chi Jihn, Yevgenia Kaganovich, Rachelle Thiewes, Kate Wagle and Jan-Ru Wan in an exploration of form and function as it relates to jewelry and body adornment. Despite the association with the word “frippery,” this is serious work which uses a variety of orthodox and unorthodox materials to explore thought-provoking issues regarding bodily decoration and the message it sends.
CHARLES WINSTANLEY THWAITES
Friday, July 18 10:30 a.m.
Charles Thwaites was active in the Midwest with Federal Art Projects during the Depression and his paintings and prints from this period are unmistakably regionalist. As art styles evolved, he responded appropriately, and in the late 1940s became one of the “Taos Moderns” by moving to New Mexico. This MWA curated show will be the first retrospective of Thwaites’ work.
