In conjunction with the November 1st panorama painting symposium, the Museum of
Wisconsin Art opened a new exhibition which will be the most comprehensive ever
held on Milwaukee's panorama painting industry. Occupying most of the museum’s lower
galleries, this exhibition will show many paintings and artifacts that have never
before been seen by the public - including some recently discovered items. Panels
by Franz Biberstein from a private home in Milwaukee are on display for the first
time outside their original home; rare photographs by painter Bernhard Schneider
featuring several of the panorama painters; outstanding oils by such artists as
F.W. Heine, Wilhelm Schroeter, John Fery, and George Peter; and maps of Milwaukee
showing where this industry and various associated studios and buildings are on
view.
With multiple text panels and numerous paintings, the exhibition is a visual delight
as well as a comprehensive introduction to the world of Milwaukee’s panorama painters
as we know and understand it today. It also delves into the complexities of the
ongoing and groundbreaking F.W. Heine diary translation project. The exhibition
will remain on display indefinitely due to the museum’s plans to build a new facility
starting in 2009. Members always have free admission to the museum.
