Wisconsin Salon of Art

Affiliation referring to artists who exhibited in the Wisconsin Salon of Art.
Many of the collection’s acquisitions were made from the competitive Wisconsin Salon of Art exhibitions. Organized annually from 1934 until 1971, the Salon was an important venue for professional artists throughout the state and a crucial proving ground for young artists. It was an opportunity to survey the latest developments in the art world, compete with established veterans, and gain wider exposure through contact with nationally-known artists, educators and curators who came to Madison to award prizes. Each year the student committee organized, hung, and handled publicity for the exhibitions. It was a daunting endeavor: 256 pieces by 116 artists were submitted in 1934 and by 1964 it had grown to 669 objects by 362 artists.
