Dorothy Meredith was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She graduated from Layton School of Art in 1927 and received her Bachelor of Education in 1933 at the Milwaukee State Teachers College followed by an BFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

Meredith was active both as a practicing watercolor artist and as an instructor in fiber arts. She taught first at Peckham Junior High School, then at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee where she was eventually Professor Emeritus. She also taught at the Oxbow Summer School of Art in Saugatuck, Michigan. She is listed in the State Historical Society of Wisconsin Collection of W.P.A art, on the Public Works Of Art Project from 1933-1934. Active in numerous professional organizations, she served at various times both as secretary and president of the Wisconsin Designer Craftsmen's organization, now known as the Wisconsin Designer Crafts Council. She was also one of the founding members of the Wisconsin Watercolor Society and also a member of the Wisconsin painters & Sculptors. For many years she was listed in Who's Who in American Art.

In 1971, her fiber art received a major prize in an exhibition mounted by the Wisconsin Designer Craftsmen at the Milwaukee Art Museum. In 1966 she won a top award in an exhibit in Japan. Meredith was in a number of solo exhibitions including the Milwaukee Art Institute, Layton Art Gallery, Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa, and the Wustum Museum, Racine, Wisconsin.
