Biography

Helen S. Moynihan

Born 1902 in Marcus, Iowa

Helen Schadel Moynihan spent the majority of her childhood in Chicago.  She attended the Chicago Art Institute and Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, and also briefly worked as a commercial artist.  In the early 1930’s she moved to Milwaukee with her husband, Frank Moynihan, and two children.   There she studied art under Robert von Neumann, Hulda Rotier Fischer, Charles Thwaites, and Armin Hansen.

As her husband was a traveling salesman, Moynihan spent much time on housework and caring for her children, but she devoted whatever spare time she had to her art.  She was most active as an artist during the 1940’s and 1950’s, at a time when private galleries were rare and female artists were not taken seriously.   She exhibited at state fairs, artist’s guilds, and social clubs as “H.S. Moynihan,” alongside artists such as Schomer Lichtner, Joe Friebert, Fred Berman and Santos Zingale.  Her work has been shown in nineteen states and seven countries.

Moynihan worked in a variety of media including watercolor, casein, oil, drybrush, ink, conte crayon, tempera, and pastel.  Her work shows her mastery of form, line, composition, and color, especially in her detailed portraiture.  She worked from direct observation and also from photographs.

She was a member of Wisconsin Painters & Sculptors and the Milwaukee Art Center.  Her name can be found in Calendar of Wisconsin Art, 1941, Milwaukee Art Institute Bulletin, vol. 17, no.1, 1944, Who Was Who in American Art, vol. II, Who’s Who in American Women, and Who’s Who in the Midwest.
