    Families Doing Art

    These classes are a wonderful opportunity to create together as a family. Families Doing Art is for children ages 4 and up with a parent or caregiver. Introduce yourself and your family to the Museum of Wisconsin Art's art programs and classes!

    Pee Wee Picassos

    Ages 3 - 5
    (one day class / 45 minutes)

    Session I: Saturday, March 10, 11:00 -11:45 a.m.
    Session II: Saturday, May 12, 11:00 -11:45 a.m.
    Adult admission free.
    Child $5

    Spend some quality time with your toddler and let their creativity loose at the art museum!  Your little artist will explore the wonders of shape, line, texture, form and design while developing manual dexterity and project development. Limit of two children per adult.  Supplies are included. Sign up for one class, or all—each session is unique!

    Celebrate Spring: Family Art Workshop

    Ages 4 and up

    The MWA Seasonal Workshops are a favorite tradition for many. Celebrate spring with a class of fun seasonal art-making activities to enjoy together with your family. Set your creativity free!

    Just For Kids

    Learning to Draw What You See

    Ages 8 - 14

    Fridays, February 3 – March 16 (NO class February 10)
    4:30 – 6:00 p.m. (Six sessions, 9 hours)

    Give your child this unique opportunity to work with professional artist Eriks Johnson, and learn new techniques for expressing ideas on paper. Students will work with charcoal and graphite and be introduced to the techniques of perspective, value and line. A range of subjects will be drawn including still life and portraiture. Supplies are included.

    Kids Master Copy Painting Class

    (ages 9-14)

    Tuesdays, April 3 – May 8
    4:15 – 6:15 p.m. (Six sessions, 12 hours)

    Working in the galleries, students will paint a copy of a Carl von Marr painting.  While creating a preliminary drawing, students will learn drawing fundamentals and principles of composition.  Next, the class will learn how to transfer the drawing to canvas. Working from full color reproductions in the studio, the class will paint their master copy.  During the painting process, students will learn color mixing, paint application, and the techniques of a master painter while copying his work.

    Stabile Sculpture

    May 12 (One session, 1.5 hours)

    Workshop I, (ages 5-8 ) 12:30 – 2:00 p.m.
    Workshop II, ages (9-14) 2:30 – 4:00 p.m.

    When one hears the name of Alexander Calder, the picture of kinetic hanging mobiles immediately comes to mind. These were only a portion of Calder's vast body of work - he also painted and created stationary pieces called "stabiles." Often, they resembled his mobiles.  Students will use plaster and cardboard to create their very own 3D piece.

    Parent/Child Introduction to Wheel Throwing

    (ages 7+)

    Saturdays, March 10 – 31
    11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. (4 Sessions, 6 Hours)

    Mom or Dad can come to class with their child and learn the very basics of wheel throwing together! Come and help your child learn to center their clay and pull up their walls so they can make their very first wheel-thrown pot.

    Wet Felted Snake

    (ages 7-10)
    Saturday April 28

    10:30 – 12:00 p.m. (One Session, 1.5 hours)

    Wet felting is magic! We will start with many colors of soft Merino wool, learn how to roll it up, wet it and make it into a snake-y little pal. Come and see how much fun it is. Please bring an old washcloth. All felting materials included.

    Feats of Clay: Ceramics for Kids

    (ages 6-13)

    Thursdays, May 3 – 31
    4:00 – 5:30 p.m. (Five sessions, 7.5 hours)

    Starting early from mud pies to sand castles, kids have a connection with clay.  We will explore shape, texture and form molded from earth.  This course will allow students to develop their connection with clay through exploration of various hand-building techniques.

    Kids Spring Break Camp

    (Ages 7 – 12)

    Monday – Friday, April 9 – 13
    10:00 a.m. – 12 Noon

    This Spring Break Camp Course is $20 public / $10 MWA members per class session or $50 public / $35 MWA members for the full five days! Pick and chose select classes or sign up for the whole week and receive big savings and a full week of great art for your child.

    Monday, April 9

    Learn how to make your very own pop-up cards that you can give as gifts!  Tiffany will show you how to make three different types of pop-up cards.

    Watercolor Painting (2 SPOTS LEFT)
    Tuesday, April 10

    Liz will teach you how she uses a variety of watercolor techniques.  Dive into the world of watercolor and learn fun specialty tricks.  This is a class for kids who love to experiment with color, shape and self expression.

    Wednesday, April 11

    Learn how to make your own book out of one piece of paper.  Tiffany will teach you how to construct a book and then have fun creating a story to put on the pages.

    Ceramic Hanging Bird Bath (FULL)
    Thursday, April 12

    The birds will be so happy to take a spring time bath.  Erin will teach students to make a small birdbath out of clay that can be hung outdoors in the spring.  A session is scheduled so that you can paint your bird bath with a glaze finish.  (Glaze session April 26, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.)

    Paper Lanterns (FULL)

    Hand made beautiful paper lanterns with Tiffany.  What a great way to decorate your bedroom.

    Watercolor Layers

    Saturdays, February 25 & March 3
    10:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. (Two sessions, 5 hours)

    Students in this class will use a variety of watercolor techniques to create beautiful, abstract compositions.  Water color pigments are translucent and when layered it can an create an interesting color mixture, saturation and texture.     Sculpting With Soapstone

    Thursday, February 2nd
    6:00 – 9:00 p.m. (One session, 3 hours)

    Soapstone is one of the oldest stones used by sculptors and is still a popular medium today.  It’s easy to shape and comes in a variety of colors.  Learn the history of this soft stone then make a beautiful hand soother.  Your handmade piece will make a wonderful personalized gift.

    Supply List : 3 grades of sandpaper (coarse, medium, fine), rasps, files, chisels, mallet or hammer.

    Wet Felted Flowers

    (ages 12-Adult)

    Saturday April 28th
    1:00 – 3:30 p.m. (One session, 2.5 hours)

    Wet felting is both Science and Art.  Sign up with Jan our new MWA fiber art instructor. 

    Students will learn how to layer non-itch Merino wool, add some sparkles, wet it, and create a beautiful unique felted flower which you may embellish yourself to make a one-of-a-kind pin.  In fact, we should have enough time to make two. Come and see how fun and easy it is.

    Plein-Air Watercolor

    Saturday May 5 & May19
    10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.  (Two sessions, 3 hours)

    En Plein Air is a French expression meaning "in the open air" and is used to describe the act of painting outdoors. Watercolors are one of the best mediums for plein air painting because they are compact, simple to set up, minimally messy and quick to dry. Liz will cover capturing the light, color & atmosphere of an outdoor scene, working quickly and intuitively while embracing the unpredictability of working outdoors.

    Wheel Throwing

    Session I: Wednesdays, February 29 – April 4
    6:00 – 8:30 p.m. (Six sessions, 15 hours)

    Session II: Wednesdays, April 18 – May 23
    6:00 – 8:30 p.m. (Six sessions, 15 hours)

    Learn methods of making pottery, including clay preparation, centering, throwing and trimming.  Learn to form several shapes and the fundamentals of creating pottery.  New and experienced students welcome.  Don’t miss out on one of our most popular classes and instructors!  Supplies are included.

    Wheel Throwing: Throwing in Stoneware

    Are you tired of taking home pottery that you can't eat and drink from? Try wheel throwing in stoneware! Students will learn about stoneware clay and how it is different from earthenware.

    Wheel Throwing Techniques: Throwing Multiples (CANCELLED)

    Saturdays, March 10 – April 14
    1:30 – 4:00 p.m. (Six sessions, 15 hours)

    This class is great for any student looking to make sets of pottery, be it mug sets, bowl sets, etc. Learn several different techniques on how to throw several items consistently.  It’s suggested that students have already had some experience with the pottery wheel.
